About

OVERVIEWThe purpose of this unit is to give trainees a basic understanding of the techniques and procedures used in the maintenance of typical reciprocating air compressors, including job preparation, safety precautions, disassembly, repair and replacement procedures, re-assembly, and operational testing. At the conclusion of this unit, trainees should have a basic understanding of the maintenance requirements for a typical reciprocating air compressor. They should know how to disassemble the compressor, inspect its parts for wear or damage, perform applicable maintenance work, and then put the compressor back together. OBJECTIVESConstruction------------------ * Explain how the air compressor used as an example in this unit is classified. * List the parts of a typical reciprocating air compressor, and state the basic function of each part. Routine Maintenance and Troubleshooting----------------------------------------------------------- * List some routine maintenance tasks that are commonly performed on reciprocating air compressors. * Describe a typical procedure for troubleshooting a reciprocating air compressor. Valve Operation and Maintenance---------------------------------------------- * Describe the parts and operation of typical feather valves, plate valves, and channel valves. * Explain how to remove, inspect, and replace a typical channel valve in a reciprocating air compressor. Disassembly and Inspection---------------------------------------- * Describe the procedure for disassembling a cylinder section of a typical reciprocating air compressor. * Explain what to look for during the inspection of a cylinder. * Describe the procedure for removing and inspecting a piston rod. * Explain how piston rings are removed, inspected, and replaced. Reassembly------------------ * Explain how to grind a piston rod into a piston and how to use bluing to check the fit. * Describe the procedure for replacing the piston assembly in the cylinder and checking clearances. * Describe the steps involved in the final reassembly of a typical reciprocating air compressor.
