About

OVERVIEWThe purpose of this unit is to introduce trainees to various types of bearings used in a plant, including sliding friction bearings and rolling contact bearings. Failures commonly associated with these bearings are discussed, and the removal and replacement of a rolling contact bearing are demonstrated. At the conclusion of this unit, trainees should have a basic understanding of friction; sliding surface and rolling contact bearings and the characteristics of each; and how to replace a rolling contact bearing. OBJECTIVESIntroduction to Bearings--------------------------------- * Explain sliding friction and rolling friction. * Define bearing. * List the three basic functions of a bearing. * Describe sliding surface bearings and rolling contact bearings. Sliding Surface Bearings---------------------------------- * Describe lubrication in sliding surface bearings. * Name the types of plain journal bearings and list their parts. * Name the types of sliding surface thrust bearings and list their parts. Sliding Surface Bearing Failures * List the general types of sliding surface bearing failures. * Name the causes of each type of failure. * Describe the characteristics of each type of failure. * Explain the measures that can be taken to prevent each type of failure. Rolling Contact Bearings * Describe the major characteristics of a rolling contact bearing. * List the different types of rolling contact bearings. * State how rolling contact bearings are lubricated. Rolling Contact Bearing Failures * List the five types of rolling contact bearing failures. * Identify the causes of each type of failure. * Describe the characteristics of each type of failure. * Explain the measures that can be taken to prevent each type of failure. Rolling Contact Bearing Replacement * Describe the removal of a rolling contact bearing. * List the steps for inspecting and cleaning a rolling contact bearing. * Demonstrate the replacement of a rolling contact bearing. SUBJECTS * Introduction to Bearings * Friction * Bearings and Their Functions * Types of Bearings * Sliding Surface Bearings * Lubrication * Journal and Thrust Bearings * Sliding Surface Bearing Failures * Fatigue Failure and Pressure Erosion * Electric Arcing, Misalignment, and Improper Lubrication * Rolling Contact Bearings * Ball Bearings and Roller Bearings * Bearing Variations * Lubrication of Anti-Friction Bearings * Rolling Contact Bearing Failures * Fatigue and Thrust Failure * Electric Arcing, Misalignment, and Improper Lubrication * Rolling Contact Bearing Replacement * Preparation and Removal * Cleaning and Inspection * Reinstalling the Bearing
